DENVILLE TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS HEALTH SERVICES
Dear Parents,
We would like you to know what is done yearly and routinely in the Health Offices of the Denville Township Schools. The following schedule complies with State Department of Education Guidelines.
Each child’s height, weight and blood pressure is measured yearly Students in grades K through 3, and grade 7 will have hearing screened. Students in grades K through 2, 4, 6, and 8 will have vision screened. Students aged 10 or older will be screened for scoliosis biennially.
Parents will be notified if a result suggests further evaluation. Should a concern arise, any student can be tested for any of the above areas at the request of a parent or teacher at any time during the school year. Scoliosis is defined as a curvature of the spine.
Scoliosis screening in children ages 10-18 is mandated to identify the problem so that early treatment can be started. We are specially trained to perform the screening. Should a spinal problem be suspected and further consultation recommended, parents will be notified and requested to see their private physician for evaluation. Please notify your school nurse if your child is currently under treatment or monitoring for a spinal problem. If you wish to be present when your child is screened, please submit a written request so you can be notified of the date and time. A student may be exempt from this examination ONLY if requested by the parent IN WRITING.
At Valleyview, physicals are required for both interscholastic and intramural sports: Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball, Cheerleading, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball and Wrestling. Each student must submit a physical examination form completed and signed by her/his healthcare provider (medical home), using our form, well in advance of the first practice so that approval to participate may be given by our school physician.
